49 shot and 15 dead on a hot August 1st in Austin, Texas (numbers vary). This bloody story has made its way into art at least twice. Number One is Luis Bunuels incredible movie “Le Fantôme de la Liberté” (1974), where the sniper is shooting from Montparnasse tower in Paris in one of the episodes, and Number Two is Lars Gustafsons novella “The Tennis Players”, in which Charles Whitman’s killing spree provides ample grounding for an otherwise light and pleasant campus novel (small bouts of Götterdämmerung notwithstanding).
